No exact numbers exist on the Japanese captures so I would like to take a moment to speak about the so called "Taiji 5"
On 2/7/97 10 Orcas were forced into Hatajiri Bay and held for 3 days. 5 were then sold to various aquariums in Japan. The other 5 were then forced away, one was bleeding and a calf was in very bad condition. All of the "Taiji 5" are now dead, 6/14/97, 6/17/97, 9/18/04, 9/19/07, and 9/19/08. It is worth mentioning that this was believed to be a transient pod.
